Warmer air brought heavier rain


A warmer atmosphere holds more water. When storms form, that extra moisture can fall as intense rain over a short time. In steep terrain, this matters.


Soil can absorb only so much water before it loses strength. Once slopes become saturated, gravity does the rest. Rocks, mud, trees, and debris can move suddenly, often with little warning.

Nepal is especially exposed


Nepal sits in the Himalayas, where sharp slopes, fragile geology, monsoon rains, road cutting, and settlement pressure already create danger. Climate change adds another layer by raising the odds of extreme rainfall.


That does not mean climate change caused every part of the event alone. It means it likely amplified the conditions that allowed the landslide to happen.

The lesson is practical. Better rainfall monitoring, slope mapping, early warnings, and safer land-use planning can save lives.
